Martinsend Lane, Great Missenden – Railway Bridge

Contact Officer: Paul Newman  (01494 732066)

The County Council has recently consulted the public and relevant bodies on options for replacing the railway bridge on the A4128 between Great Missenden and Prestwood.

The County Council had originally proposed a major reconstruction of the bridge to bring it up to standard for 40 tonne vehicles.  This would include the closure of the bridge for an extensive period.

Of the revised options 87% of respondents opted for a scheme to maintain the existing bridge.  Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd (formerly Railtrack) have been approached to strengthen the bridge to meet their legal obligations and carry out other strengthening at the County Council’s expense to allow it to carry 17 tonne vehicles.  This will ensure it is available for emergency vehicles, fire engines, busses, gritters, refuse vehicles.

Designs are being prepared and the work programmed with the intention of carrying out the work during the school holidays as their revised works will need the bridge to be closed to traffic for approximately 6 weeks.

The County Council is looking at the alternative routes that will need to be signed during the road closure and will be talking to local Members and taking into account views expressed during the consultation process.
