HUGHENDEN VALLEY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
PETITION TO SEEK TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY
LOWERING THE 50MPH SPEED LIMIT TO 40MPH ON THE A4128 ON VALLEY ROAD TO THE TOP OF CRYERS HILL ROAD WHERE IT BECOMES 30MPH
Part of the A4128 Valley Road and Cryers Hill Road has a speed limit of 50mph which residents believe should be lower because it is a residential area lying in the Parish of Hughenden where the 30mph speed limit prevails, with 40mph on several roads.
Traffic levels have risen steadily over the last decade and residents who live on Cryers Hill, have raised the following concerns:
1. Their safety when trying to drive onto the road from their property. Some residents who have blind spots caused e.g. by bends in the road, have reported near-misses to the Hughenden Valley Residents Association Road Rep.
2. Experiencing fear of accident when they slow down to enter their driveways whilst traffic is racing behind them at speed.
3. On the 50mph section of Valley Road the residents living at the hamlet of Church Farm and Hitchenden Farm face the same safety issues when entering and leaving their properties.
4. The speed limit causes issues of safety on the approaches to the round-about at the bottom of Cryers Hill Road. Drivers travelling at 50mph slow down and brake sharply and traffic coming behind get close to the braking cars in front. This has been observed on several occasions by the Lead Petitioner.
5. This petition is not about speeding but the appropriateness of the speed limit and the compliance of drivers to it. From speed recordings taken ranging from 38mph – 53mph the mean speed is 44mph. The evidence suggests compliance can be achieved.
6. For Information
Traffic has to slow down at the top of the hill to transition speed
on entering the 30mph limit near Great Kingshill Primary School.
There are many children and parents crossing the road at the
beginning and end of the school day – they are at risk. Great
Kingshill School is itself seeking Road Calming outside the school
including a 20mph limit, but it would be easier to transition from
40mph to 30mph [or 20mph] than from the current 50mph to 30mph [or
20mph].
