     (a)

Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 – Hackney Carriage Fare Increase

Contact Officer: Martin Holt  (01494 732056)

Whilst no request has yet been made by taxi drivers to increase the fares they charge passengers for a journey, the policy is that the fares are reviewed annually. Officers have delegated powers to initially decide on the Table of Fares to be charged and then advertise the rate in accordance with legislative requirements.

If the public and/or trade make any objections the matter is referred back to committee for consideration. At which stage the Table of Fares can be revised or confirmed.

During last year whilst the price of fuel has remained stable other motoring costs such as insurance have risen. Whilst a minor charge in overall motoring costs, the fees charged by the District Council for the licensing of Hackney Carriage and Private Hire will be increased with effect from the 1st April 2003 by 10%.

In considering any increase the above factors were considered and a decision made to increase the Table of Fares by approximately 2.5% this to take effect from 28th July 2003. Such an increase would result in charge of £3.90 for a two-mile journey.

It is anticipated that objections will be received and that Members would then review the proposal and decide on the Table of Fares to be charged.
